Scientific Computing currently has 2 (physical) types of file servers:
The storage on these servers is split up into multiple name spaces for different purposes and different groups, including a read/write-thru cache for Experimental Physics and another for LQCD, a "volatile" scratch space, and user (group) managed "work" areas. The cache and volatile areas are managed by in-house developed processes that automatically clean the space and enforce hard and soft quota limits. For additional details see the subsections below.
